Celaque National Park

Cerro El Gallo

The Celaque National Park contains the highest peak in Honduras which is Cerro las Minas. The park was established in 1987 for the mountain Cerros las Minas and 266 square kilometers of surrounding territories. Before the park was established the people of La Campa, which is a town nearby, were nervous about the logging that was being done in Celaque’s peaks. The result of the logging was a loss of biodiversity and vital resources for the communities nearby. When the park was established the land around it was nationally protected from logging, agriculture, outside incursion, and market-related forestry exploitation. Cerro las Minas reached approximately 2,870 meters (9,416 ft) above sea level and had an elevation ranging from 975 to 2,870 meters (3,199 to 9,416 ft). The park is located in the western part of Honduras in the Lempira department. The Celaque National Park terrain is rugged and rich with animal life. Some of the animals that inhabit this park are pumas, ocelots, and quetzals. Overall the Calaque National Park's terrain is very steep and rugged and high in elevation.
